Temporary quarters at Jay Peak while Mountain Station was built.
The Jay Volunteer Fire Dept was started in 1979 with the approval at town meeting to spend $20,000 in revenue sharing funds. This purchased equipment, a 1952 International Pumper from Athol, Ma as well as turnout gear. The Town of Vernon, VT donated a 1949 Army 6x6 truck that had been used as a fire tanker. A Chevy pickup was given to the department through the State of Vermont Forest & Parks.
With this basic equipment and the completion of a 45 hour Basic Fire Fighter course the Jay Volunteer Fire Department went into service in the spring of 1980 with 20 members. All equipment was housed in the Town of Jay Garage.
In 1983 land was purchased and a fire station was built on Revoir Flats in Jay Village. A bank loan was used to build the station, and fundraisers were used to pay back the loan. The town of Jay appropriates funds to the Jay Volunteer Fire Dept at the yearly Town meeting..
The fundraisers ended in the mid 1980's with the start of Saturday night Bingo which continued until December 2008 when Bingo ended due to low crowds & high fuel expenses. Bingo funds and an increase in the town appropriations over the years enabled the Fire Dept to add an addition to the original Fire Station and trucks have been replaced over the years on a need basis. With the demise of Bingo the Jay Volunteer Fire Dept once again depends on fundraisers and a yearly town appropriation.
The Jay Focus Group, a 501(c)3 Non Profit Charitable Organization, raises funds for the Jay Volunteer Fire Dept annually with Monte Carlo Casino Night and the annual Town of Jay Benefit Golf Tournament. Fire Fighters raise addtional funds with an annual Gun Raffle and participate in the Columbus Weekend Coin Drop.
Since 9/11 Federal grants have also allowed the department to add and upgrade equipment.
Station #2 at Jay Peak Resort was opened in the spring of 2010 with the arrival of the 1996 Aerial Tower Truck both of which were funded by Jay Peak Resort.
