Arnold A. Cota, Sr., 85, of Jay passed away on December 28, 2009 in Newport. He was born on December 7, 1924 in Newport Center a son of Archie and Hazel (Morse) Cota. Arnold married Dale Sargent in 1944 who predeceased him on October 24, 2007. Mr. Cota was a charter member and a member of the Jay Fire Dept and also helped build the station and started and ran bingo for the department. Arnold played bingo for years and loved to dance with his wife and loved his family and enjoyed their visits. He was a member of the Troy Masonic Lodge #16. He and his wife Dale owned and operated the family farm from 1952 to 1987 and he was also employed at Jay Peak for several years. Arnold is survived by children: Arnold Cota, Jr. and his wife Mary of Jay, Terry Cota and his fiancé Dorann of St. Johnsbury, and Delbert Cota and his wife Ann of Jay, grandchildren: Susan Galofaro and her husband Richard of CA, Dean Cota and his wife Cindy of Milton, Karen Cota and her companion Douglas Sheahan of CA, Nikole Brainard and her husband Lindsay of Derby, Jamie Cota and his wife Sandy of NM, Amy Deavitt and her husband Keith of South Burlington, Buffy Ardine and her husband Martin of NH, Heidi Rappold and her husband Scott of Jay, Betsy Purvis and her husband Michael of NH, Melissa Scherer and her husband Michael of Beebe, VT, Meghan Gyles and her fiancé Cory Peck of West Charleston, 17 grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, a brother Howard Cota and his wife Melba of Troy, sisters-in-law Carol Cota and Louise Sargent, several nieces and nephews, predeceased by his wife Dale Cota and a brother Archie Jr. Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 31, 2009 at 10:30 AM the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home 4670 Darling Hill Rd. Newport with the Rev. Richard Whitehill officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 until the hour of the funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday December 31, 2009. Spring interment will be held at the Jay Cemetery. Should friends desire contributions in his memory may be made to the Jay Volunteer Fire Department c/o Doug James, 197 Beadle Hill Rd.
