Fred Pierce Cushing,Sr

November 17, 1931 - February 21, 2013

Fred Pierce Cushing, Sr, went home to be with the Lord on February 21, 2013. Fred was born in Brockton, MA, on November 17, 1931. His father was Walter David Cushing and his mother was Helen Emma (Pierce) Cushing. He served his Country in the U.S. Army before and during the Korean War. Fred was a teacher at the Guided Missile School in Fort Bliss, Texas and later helped establish the Eastern Air Defense Command. After the service, Fred worked for several large manufacturing corporations as a machinist, plant engineer, engineering manager, production manager, plant superintendant, and plant manager. After retirement he served his town of Jay, Vermont as Town Moderator, Lister Chairman, and Zoning Administrator for many years which resulted in many sessions with Jay Peak for permitting process and he was also a member of N.V.D.A. Fred was very active at the North Troy Congregational Church, serving as a Deacon, Trustee, and Head Usher for several years. He enjoyed playing cards, bus trips, and visiting with his many friends at the senior meal sites. Fred is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Edna Cushing of Jay, VT, by his six children and their families: Mary and Bill Harris, Fred Pierce Cushing, Jr, Nancy and John Sparacio, David and Kristine Cushing, Steve and Kim Cushing, and Chris and Kerri Cushing. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, by his sisters: Marge Vierra, Helen Cushing-Raum and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by a baby brother. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday March 2, 2013 at the North Troy Congregational Church with the Rev. Richard O’Hara and Rev. Rick Shover officiating. A luncheon will follow at the East Side Restaurant in Newport, VT beginning at 4:00 P.M. Should friends desire, contributions in Fred’s memory may be made to the North Troy Congregational Church, P.O. Box 199, North Troy, Vermont 05859.
