Acrylic Paint is banned from landfill disposal and is collected as a part of our Household Hazardous Waste collection program, held annually at our Lyndonville Recycling Center from May 1 through September. Or, 5 gallons a day can be brought to any participating PaintCare location.

Metal aerosol cans of any type (spray paint, food, bath and body products) can be brought to many NEKWMD Recycling Centers. Plastic aerosol bottles should be disposed as trash.

Air conditioners are banned from landfill disposal, and are accepted at the Lyndonville Recycling Center free of charge year-round. Some town-managed recycling centers collect freon-containing appliances for residents, including Island Pond, E. Ryegate, Corinth, and Morgan.

Air Pillow and other plastic packaging are recyclable at participating Trex locations. They can also be disposed with trash.

Aluminum cans and foil are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted for recycling at any NEKWMD recycling center. 

Aluminum siding is accepted as scrap metal at the Lyndonville Recycling Center.

Ammunition of any kind is not accepted by the NEKWMD. Call the VT State Patrol Explosive Unit at (802) 244-8727.

Animal mortalities are handled in a very specific way. If you have an animal carcus to dispose of, please contact the State Solid Waste Management Program at (802) 241-3888.

​Anti-freeze is considered a Household Hazardous Waste and is collected at our Lyndonville Recycling Facility annually from May 1-early Oct., or can be brought to any Household Hazardous Waste collection. Please call for an appointment to dispose of anti-freeze.

Metal appliances such as clothes dryers, dishwashers, freezers, ranges, refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, water heaters, are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted at many NEKWMD recycling centers as scrap metal. If your local recycling center does not accept appliances, Lyndonville recycling center accepts them year-round from all district residents.

Arsenic wood and pressure-treated wood should be disposed as trash at your community's permanent bulky disposal, annual bulky event, or at the Coventry landfill or St. Johnsbury Transfer Station.

Asbestos, both friable and non-friable, can cause respitory harm. Some forms of asbestos, such as tiles and roofing, can be removed by homeowners. Asbestos tiles, siding and roofing must be dampened and securly wrapped in plastic. Take material directly to accepting landfill or transfer station. Other asbestos materials must be handled by a licenses asbestos abatement contracor. Contact the VT Department of Health at (802) 863-7200, or toll-free at (800) 464-4343 for a list of licensed asbestos abatement contractors.

Ashes are a great fertilizer for your lawn and garden during the spring. Ashes should only be added to compost in small quantities. COLD ashes can be disposed in the trash. WARM or HOT ashes are a fire hazard.

For vehicle disposal, you can donate your vehicle through these organizations: Kids Car Donations, Good News Garage, Wheels for Wishes, or Goodwill Car Donations.You can also contact SellMax or a local scrap yards which may be able to pay for your vehicle.

Asphalt shingles, and other building materials, are Bulky Waste and can be brought to your community's permanent bulky disposal, annual bulky event, or to the Coventry landfill or St. Johnsbury Transfer Station. Or, go to the VT State Website for more disposal options.

Automotive Fluids are accepted through our Household Hazardous Waste collection program.

Used motor oil (unmixed) can be disposed at the Lyndonville Recycling Center year-round.

Building materials, including construction and demolition waste, are Bulky Waste and can be brought to your community's permanent bulky disposal, annual bulky event, or to the Coventry landfill or St. Johnsbury Transfer Station. Or, go to the VT State Website for more disposal options.

Ballasts labeled 'no-PCBs" can be recycled as scrap metal. If there is no mention of PCBs, the ballast is assumed to contain PCBs and must be brought to a Household Hazardous Waste collection or to at the Lyndonville Recycling Center. Call for more details.

Car batteries and other lead-acid batteries are banned from landfill disposal and can be disposed of at many NEKWMD recycling centers year round. If your community does not collect lead-acid batteries, bring to Lyndonville recycling center.

Single-use and rechargable batteries are accepted year-round at many of our NEKWMD recycling facilities. Store batteries in bags with like kinds, or tape terminal ends before disposal.

Books, both soft and hard-covered, are collected at many NEKWMD recycling centers. Soft-covered can be disposed with mixed-paper, ask attendant for location of hard-covered book disposal.

Bikes that are damaged can be recycled in any community with a scrap metal container, or brought to Lyndonville recycling center. If bikes are in good condition, we accept them for repair at the Lyndonville Recycling Center.

Bubble wrap and other plastic packaging are recyclable at participating Trex locations. They can also be disposed with trash.

Metal caps and lids should be removed from containers and recycled with tin. Plastic screw-top caps that are less than 2 inches (such as plastic beverage bottle caps) should be disposed in household trash. Larger plastic lids (such as peanut butter or laundry detergent) can be removed from the container and recycled with plastic.

Cardboard boxes are banned from landfill diposal and can be recycled at any NEKWMD recycling center. Remove tape and break down boxes. 

Food cartons, such as ice cream, juice, or milk cartons are not recyclable and must be disposed in the trash. 

Cassette tapes and cases are not recyclable and can be disposed with household trash.

​Car seats cannot be recycled and must be disposed as trash.

Cell phones are banned from landfill disposal can be recycled at all NEKWMD recycling centers with the Call2battery collection.

Carpeting and rugs and can be disposed at any community with bulky waste collection, or at your town's bulky waste disposal event, if available. Bulky Waste can also be brought directly to the Casella Transfer Station in St. Johnsbury on High St. or to the Coventry landfill.

CDs, DVDs, and their cases are not recyclable and should be disposed of with regular household trash.

Christmas lights and other ornaments are not recyclable and should be disposed with household trash.

Natural Christmas trees are considered a "clean wood" and are banned from landfill disposal. Compost your Christmas tree at home or bring to Lyndonville Recycling Center for free disposal. Artificial Christmas trees should be disposed as trash.

Cleaning products are considered household hazardous waste and can be disposed at the Lyndonville recycling center by appointment, May 1- Early October, or can be brought to any district HHW event. Cleaning product containers can be rinsed and recycled or diposed in the trash, depending on the packaging type.

Metal clothes hangers can be disposed as scrap metal at the Lyndonville Recycling Center. Plastic clothes hangers cannot be recycled and should be disposed with household trash.

Clothing, textiles, shoes, and accessories can be recycled IN THE DESIGNATED APPAREL IMPACT BIN at the Lyndonville Recycling Center during regular hours. All material must be bagged. Do not recycle any moldy or odorous clothing. 

Additional recycling centers with Apparel Impact clothing collectin bins (available to town residents only): Danville, Ryegate, Marshfield

Annually in the fall, there is a clothing drop and swap at the North Country Union High School gymnasium. Please contact the NEKWMD for more details of this event. 

Residents can also donate quality used clothing to HOPE in Lyndonville and the Salvation Army in St. Johnsbury. Please contact these locations before bringing donations to these locations. 

Coffee machines cannot be recycled and must be disposed with household trash.

Dehumidifiers, which contain freon, are banned from landfill disposal and can be disposed  at the Lyndonville Recycling Center.

Computers and peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc) are banned from landfill disposal. Any resident of any Vermont town can recycle Computers at any E-waste drop off location for free.

Concrete and masontry wastes are Bulky Waste and can be brought to your community's permanent bulky disposal, annual bulky waste event, or the Coventry landfill. Or, go to the VT State Website for more disposal options.

Construction and Demolition wastes are Bulky Waste and can be brought to your community's permanent bulky disposal, annual bulky waste event, or the Coventry landfill. Or, go to the VT State Website for more disposal options.

Cooking oil and grease is banned from landfill disposal. Small amounts of cooking oil and grease can be composted with food scraps at any participating NEKWMD food scrap collection location. Large amouns of cooking oil can be brought directly to the Lyndonville Recycling Center. Restaurants and Grocers can contact Black Bear Biodiesel regarding storage and pick-up service. 

Diapers are not compostable or recyclable and should be disposed with household trash.

Diseased and noxious plants are not accepted at any NEKWMD stump dump. No local compost facility accepts the material. Some diseased or invasive plants can be composted at home, in their own pile. The compost should not be used in gardens and lawns. Some invasives may be burned, be sure to follow local regulations and restrictions regarding burn piles. If this is not possible, landfill disposal is allowed as a last resort.

Metal and screen doors can be disposed with scrap metal. Wooden and glass doors are trash and and can be brought to your community's permanent bulky disposal, annual bulky waste event, or the Coventry landfill.

Sheetrock and other building material are considered a Bulky Waste and can disposed in any community that accepts bulky trash, brought to the Coventry landfill, or disposed of to your town's next Bulky Waste Collection Event. Or, go to the VT State Website for more disposal options.

Egg Cartons that are plastic can be recycled at any NEKWMD recycling center. Foam cartons can be recycled at any participating EPS Foam collection location. Paper Egg Cartons can be recycled with cardboard/boxboard. Many Recycling Centers collect cartons for reuse. 

Electronic waste such as computers (and all peripherals), laptops, monitors, printers, televisions, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, game consoles, stereos, fax machines, phones, MP3 players are banned from landfill disposal as they contain toxic chemicals and prescious metals. E-waste drop off locations are available throughout the NEKWMD for free disposal. TV and Computer disposal is free for all Vermonters at any location statewide.

Eyeglasses can be recycled through many local pharmacy programs. Contact your local pharmacies to see if they offer such a program.

Most exercise equipment can be recycled as scrap metal at the Lyndonville Recycling Center, or your local communities' scrap metal, if available. 

Metal fans can be disposed as scrap metal in Lyndonville and many other recycling centers. If your town does not have a scrap metal container, Lyndonville accepts metal from any district resident. If the fan is plastic, such as most box fans, it should be disposed as trash.

Fax Machines are banned from landfill disposal in Vermont and can be recycled at any one of our E-waste drop off location for free disposal. If your local recycling center does not accept electronics, you can bring your e-waste to any participating collection location for free.

Fertilizers are considered a hazardous waste and can be disposed at the Lyndonville Recycling Center, May 1 - early Oct., or at any Household Hazardous Waste collection in a NEKWMD town.

Fire extinguishers can be disposed of at many NEKWMD recycling facilities with aerosols. Call for more information.

Waste Districts do not accept exposives, ammunition, or fireworks of any kind for recycling or disposal. Please contact the VT State Patrol Explosives Disposal Unit at (802) 244-8727 for proper disposal information.

Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) contain Mercury and are banned from landfill disposal. Many NEKWMD recycling centers, including Lyndonville, collect CFLs for safe and proper disposal.

Food is banned from landfill disposal. Food that is suitable for donation can be donated to a local food shelf. Please contact the food shelf for more information.

Food scraps are banned from landfill disposal and can be composted at home in a pile or bin or can be brought to your town's recycling center and disposed in the food scrap totes. Food scraps are composted here in the NEK. All food scraps, including meat, dones, and dairy products are accepted at NEKWMD food scrap collection locations.

Frozen food boxes can be recycled with cardboard at any NEKWMD reycling facility.

Furniture is considered a Bulky Waste and can be disposed at any community with bulky waste collection, or at your town's bulky waste disposal event, if available. Bulky Waste can also be brought directly to the Casella Transfer Station in St. Johnsbury on High St. or to the Coventry landfill.

Video Game Consoles are banned from landfill disposal and can be recycled at any E-waste drop off location for free. Any district resident can dispose of e-waste at any participating location.

Gasoline and Gas/Oil mixtures are considered household hazardous waste and can be brought to the Lyndonville recycling center by appointment, May 1- Early October, or can be brought to any district Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Glass bottles and jars are banned from landfill disposal. Glass jars and bottles of any color can be recycled at any NEKWMD recycling center. Broken glass bottles and jars can also be recycled with glass.

Glassware (drinking cups) and ceramicware are not accepted at any recycling center and should be disposed as household trash.

Household Hazardous Wastes includes any household products labelled “caution, toxic, danger, hazard, warning, poisonous, reactive, corrosive, or flammable”. These materials  can be brought to any Household Hazardous Waste collection or by appointment to the Lyndonville Recycling center, May 1- early Oct. Empty containers should be disposed according to material. Please do not recycle any pesticide or motor oil containers.

Herbicide products can be brought to any Household Hazardous Waste collection or by appointment to the Lyndonville Recycling center, May 1- early Oct. Empty containers should be disposed in the trash.

Heating Oil can be disposed at any Household Hazardous Waste collection or by appointment to the Lyndonville Recycling center, May 1- Oct 1.

Humidifiers are not recyclable and should be disposed with household trash.

To be safe and legal, dispose of home-generated sharps, needles, and syringes in this manner:

1. Place sharps in an empty, rigid plastic container, such as a laundry detergent bottle.

2. Tape the bottle’s cap shut with strong tape. Firmly attach a “Do Not Recycle” label to the bottle. You can print this sample label or call 802-828-1138 to request "Do Not Recycle" stickers for home-generated sharps.

3. Dispose of bottle in the trash.

The Universal Recycling Law allows people to reuse rigid plastic bottles to dispose of their home-generated sharps.

Joint compound or spackling is non-toxic and should be disposed with regular household trash.

Latex Paint is considered a household hazardous waste and can be disposed at the Lyndonville recycling center by appointment, May 1-early Oct., or to any of our district HHW events. You can also find a participating PaintCare location to dispose of up to 5gal/day.

Unused lead paint is considered a hazardous material and can be brought by appointment to our Lyndonville recycling center, May 1- Oct 1, or to any of our district Household Hazardous Waste collection program. Lead Paint chips or wood with lead paint is trash.

Lead sinkers are banned from use in VT. Please call us at 626-3532 if you have lead sinkers to dispose of. Lead sinkers are accepted at any Household Hazardous Waste event.

Leaf and yard debris is banned from landfill disposal and is a great source of carbon for backyard compost piles, or can simply be left to breakdown on your property. The Lyndonville Recycling Center and several NEKWMD recycling centers collects yard waste and clean brush, call for more details or check in with your transfer station attendant. Many towns also offer a stump dump, ask your local attendant for more information.

Magazines are banned from landfill disposal and can be recycled with mixed paper at any NEKWMD recycling centers.

Mail, including junk mail and envelopes, are banned from landfill disposal and can be recycled with mixed paper at any NEKWMD recycling center.

Prescriptions and over-the-counter medications should be disposed through local take-back programs, at the following locations year-round:

Home-generated medical waste should always be disposed of as trash. Regulated medical waste must be disposed through a registered hauler, such as SteriCycle and MedPro.

Mercury-containing product are banned from landfill disposal and can be disposed through our Household Hazardous Waste collection program.

Scrap metal is banned from landfill disposal and is accepted at many NEKWMD transfer stations, as well as the Lyndonville Recycling Center.

Microwave ovens (and other metal appliances) are accepted at any recycling center with a scrap metal container. The Lyndonville Recycling Center collects scrap metal appliances if your town does not have a scrap metal container.

Mirror glass cannot be recycled and should be disposed safely with household trash.

Motor oil and filters are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted at many NEKWMD transfer stations, and is accepted year-round at the Lyndonville Recycling Center.

Newspaper is banned from landfill disposal and can be recycled at any NEKWMD recycling center in mixed-paper.

Notebooks can be recycled with scrap paper at all NEKWMD recycling centers. Please remove any metal or plastic bindings before recycling.

Many local recycling centers accept oil filters, as well as used oil. Check in with your local tranfer station. Lyndonville recycling center also accepts motor oil and filters.

Oil tanks can be disposed as scrap metal at the Lyndonville Recycling Center. Tank must have a 12in x 12inch hole cut into the side before recycling to ensure vapors are released.

Paints, varnishes, stains, and thinners are household hazardous wastes and are collected seasonally by appointment at the Lyndonville Recycling Center. May 1- Oct 1, or at any Household Hazardous Waste collection. 5 gallons a day can be brought to any participating PaintCare location.

Empty paint cans, if metal, can be disposed with scrap metal at your local recycling center, of the Lyndonville recycling center.Empty paint cans that are plastic can be disposed of with household trash.

The NEKWMD accepts reusable pallets, 40"x48". Please call the office at 802-626-3532 if you need to dispose of good-quality pallets. Pallets that are not reusable should be disposed as trash.

Paper, including junk mail, office paper, newspaper and magazines, etc., are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted at all NEKWMD recycling centers with our mixed paper collection.

Paper bags (Kraft bags) are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted at all NEKWMD recycling centers with our CARDBOARD collection.

Pesticides are banned from landfill disposal and are considered a hazardous waste. Lyndonville recycling center accepts hazardous waste seasonally, May 1-early Oct., or can be brought to any Household Hazardous Waste collection. Call for more details.

Clean pizza boxes can be recycled with cardboard at all NEKWMD recycling center. Dirty pizza boxes can be disposed with household trash.

Plastic bottles labeled #1 & #2 banned from landfill disposal, and can be recycled at all NEKWMD recycling centers. We also accept #3, #4, and food-grade #5, under 2-gal capacity. Please rinse containers of food residue. We cannot accept any black plastic containers, regardless of the number within recycling symbol. Please remove screw-top caps from beverage containers.

The NEKWMD no longer accepts plastic bags and films for recycling. Plastic bags are accepted by major grocery retailers in our area (Shaw's, Price Chopper, Hannaford's locations). Find out more information about acceptable materials and participating locations at Trex Recycling.

Plastic buckets larger than 2.5 gallons are not recyclable and should be disposed as trash. This includes cat litter buckets, 5-gal pails.

NEKWMD recycling centers accept 1# Propane tanks with metal aerosol cans. 20# propane tanks are accepted at the Lyndonville Recycling Center.

Reciept paper can be recycled with mixed paper at any NEKWMD Recycling Center.

Refrigerators and Freezers are banned from landfill disposal and can be recycled for free at the Lyndonville Recycling Center. Some towns also accept freon-containing appliances from residents, please call for more information or ask the attendant in your community.

Shredded paper is banned from landfill disposal and can be recycled with mixed paper at any NEKWMD recycling center. Please bag shredded paper before recycling.

Shoes in good condition can be donated to local thrift stores such as HOPE in Lyndonville or Salvation Army in St. Johnsbury. Otherwise, shoes should be disposed with household trash.

Smoke Detectors can be recycled with electronics at any participating  E-waste program locations. Smoke detectors can also be disposed with household trash.

Televisions are banned from landfill disposal and are collected through our E-waste program and should not be disposed of in the landfill.  Any resident of any Vermont town can recycle TVs at any location free of charge. 

Mercury-containing thermostats are banned from landfill disposal. MERCURY THERMOSTAT INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Vermonter's who properly recycle Mercury Thermostats at participating locations can receive either an in-store credit (if returned to retail location) or a mailed reimbursement check (if returned to local recycling center). All other thermostats are household trash.

Alcohol thermometers can be disposed as trash. Thermometers containing Mercury are hazardous waste and can be disposed by appointment to our Lyndonville recycling center, May 1- Oct 1, or to any of our district Household Hazardous Waste collection program.

Tin cans are are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted at many NEKWMD recycling center.

Tires are banned from landfill disposal and are accepted at many NEKWMD recycling centers for a fee, including the Lyndonville recycling center. Please call 802-626-3532 for current pricing.

Toys that are in good condition can be donated to local thrift stores, such as HOPE in Lyndonville. Toys, even when plastic, are not recyclable and should be disposed with household trash.

Vacuum cleaners are not recyclable and can be disposed with household trash.

VHS tapes and cases are not recyclable and can be disposed with household trash.

Vinyl siding and other building material are considered a Bulky Waste and can disposed in any community that accepts bulky trash, brought to the Coventry landfill, or disposed of to your town's next Bulky Waste Collection Event.

Vinyl records cannot be recycled and should be disposed with household trash.
